Looking to dip your toes into the flats fishing world? This full-day trip with Captain Phil Hill's Guide Service is your gateway to some of the best shallow water fishing on the Texas coast. We're talking eight solid hours on the crystal-clear flats of Laguna Madre, where the water's so clear you can spot fish from 50 yards out. This isn't some rushed half-day deal – we've got time to teach you the ropes, find the fish, and make sure you're comfortable with every cast. Perfect for families, first-timers, or anyone who wants to learn proper flats techniques without feeling rushed.
We launch at 7:00 AM sharp from South Padre Island, giving us the jump on other boats and hitting those prime morning feeding windows. You'll be fishing from my 18-foot Shallow Sport – built specifically for these flats and shallow enough to get into spots where the big boats can't follow. The Laguna Madre is our backyard here, and it's hands down one of the most productive inshore fisheries in Texas. These gin-clear waters let us sight fish most of the day, meaning you'll actually see the redfish tailing or watch a trout blow up on your lure. The boat holds up to three anglers comfortably, but we cap it at two guests for this beginner trip so everyone gets plenty of personal attention. I handle all the bait, tackle, and fish cleaning – your job is just to learn, have fun, and hopefully bend some rods.
Flats fishing is a whole different animal from deep water or surf fishing. We're working in water that's typically 1-4 feet deep, using light tackle and making precise casts to specific fish or likely spots. I'll start you off with live shrimp under popping corks – deadly effective and forgiving for beginners. As the day goes on and you get comfortable, we might switch to soft plastics or topwater plugs if the fish are aggressive. The key to flats fishing is being quiet and observant. We pole or drift most areas to avoid spooking fish, and I'll teach you to read the water – spotting nervous baitfish, finding drop-offs, and recognizing prime ambush spots where predators like to hang out. Don't worry if you've never used spinning gear before; we'll start with the basics and work up from there.
Snook are the crown jewel of these flats, and South Padre Island sits right in their prime habitat range. These silver missiles are ambush predators that love structure – docks, mangrove roots, channel edges, anything that gives them cover. They're incredibly aggressive when they're feeding, often exploding on topwater baits with jumps that'll get your heart racing. Snook typically run 18-28 inches in these waters, though we see plenty of slot fish in the 24-26 inch range that fight like fish twice their size. Best action usually comes early morning and late afternoon when they're actively hunting. What makes snook special is their attitude – they hit hard, jump high, and never give up easy.
Redfish are our bread and butter here on the flats. These copper-colored bruisers are built for shallow water living and they're perfect for learning proper flats techniques. Reds cruise the shallows looking for crabs, shrimp, and small baitfish, often giving away their location with their tails sticking out of the water while they feed head-down. They typically range from 20-32 inches in the Laguna Madre, with most fish falling in that perfect slot range. Spring through fall are prime time, but we catch reds year-round in these protected waters. They're forgiving targets for beginners because they're not as spooky as trout, and once hooked, they make long, powerful runs that showcase what flats fishing is all about.
Speckled Trout round out our main target species and they're absolutely perfect for teaching finesse fishing. These spotted beauties are structure-oriented and love grass flats, shell bars, and channel drop-offs. Specks typically run 14-20 inches here, with occasional trophies pushing 24+ inches that local anglers call "gator trout." They're most active during cooler months but we catch them consistently through most of the year. What's great about targeting specks is they school up, so when you find one, you've usually found several. They're also excellent table fare, making them a favorite for families who want to take home a fresh fish dinner.
This trip delivers everything you need for a top-rated flats fishing experience without overwhelming beginners. Eight hours gives us real time to cover water, teach techniques, and put you on fish. The Laguna Madre's protected waters mean we're fishing comfortably even when it's breezy offshore, and the shallow draft boat gets us into the best spots where larger vessels can't reach. All you need is a valid Texas fishing license, some snacks, drinks, and sunscreen. I provide everything else – rods, reels, bait, tackle, and fish cleaning service. Whether you're planning a family outing, want to try something new, or you're ready to get serious about flats fishing, this world-class fishery delivers. These beginner-friendly trips book up fast, especially during peak season, so grab your dates while they're available.
Redfish are the bread and butter of our flats fishing here on South Padre Island. These copper-colored bruisers with their signature black spots near the tail typically range from 20-28 inches, with bulls pushing 30-plus inches giving you a real workout. They cruise the shallow flats in 1-4 feet of water, often with their backs exposed, feeding around grass beds and oyster shell. Year-round fishing is solid, but spring and fall offer the most consistent action. What makes reds so popular is their strong, bulldogging fight and willingness to eat both live bait and artificials. They're also fantastic eating with mild, sweet meat. Local tip: look for nervous water or subtle wakes on calm days - that's usually reds pushing bait in the shallows where you can sight-cast to them.

Speckled trout are a staple of our shallow water fishing here at South Padre. These spotted beauties average 14-18 inches with that classic trout shape and silver sides dotted with black spots. You'll find them cruising grass flats and sandy potholes in 2-8 feet of water, often in small schools. They bite best during cooler months from October through March, and early morning or late evening sessions really shine. What guests love about specks is their willingness to bite and their delicate, flaky white meat that's perfect for the dinner table. They're not the strongest fighters, but they make up for it with consistent action. Here's a local trick: when you find one speck, slow down and work that area thoroughly - where there's one, there's usually more nearby.

Snook are one of our most exciting targets here in the Laguna Madre. These sleek, golden fish with that distinctive black lateral line typically run 18-24 inches, though we occasionally hook into 3-footers that'll really test your drag. They love hanging around mangroves, docks, and grass lines in 2-6 feet of water. Spring through fall offers the best action, especially around new and full moons when they're most active. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and acrobatic fight - they'll jump, run, and try every trick to throw your hook. They're also excellent table fare with firm, white meat. Pro tip: cast your lure past the structure and work it back parallel to the cover - snook ambush from the shadows, so don't fish right on top of them.
