If you're looking to really get after it on the flats, this full-day adventure with Captain Phil Hill is exactly what you need. We're talking eight solid hours on some of the most productive shallow water along the Texas coast. Starting at 7:00 AM, you'll have the entire day to work the gin-clear waters of Laguna Madre, where redfish cruise the grass flats and speckled trout ambush baitfish in the sandy potholes. This isn't a rushed half-day deal – we take our time, fish multiple spots, and give you the real South Padre Island experience. The 18' Shallow Sport is built for these skinny waters, and with room for just two anglers, you get personalized attention all day long.
This trip runs at a pace that lets you soak up everything the Laguna Madre has to offer. We launch early to beat the boat traffic and take advantage of those prime morning hours when the fish are most active. The beauty of having eight hours is we can adapt to conditions – if the bite slows in one area, we've got time to relocate and find where they're feeding. You'll be sight-casting to cruising reds, working topwater lures over grass beds, and dropping soft plastics into structure that holds big trout. The shallow draft of our flats boat means we can get into spots that bigger vessels can't reach, putting you on fish that don't see much pressure. Expect to cover a lot of water, from the protected back lakes to the more open bay areas where the bigger fish roam.
Fishing the flats is all about reading the water and understanding how these fish move. We'll be using light tackle and artificial lures most of the day – think topwater plugs during the morning bite, soft plastics when we need to get down in the grass, and suspending baits for working the deeper edges. The key is staying quiet and making accurate casts. When you're in two feet of water and can actually see the fish, presentation becomes everything. I'll have you positioned for the best shots, whether we're poling into position or using the trolling motor to stay on a school. The tackle is all provided, from the rods and reels down to the leader material, but I'm always happy to let you throw your own gear if you prefer a particular setup.
Redfish are the bread and butter of South Padre Island flats fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers average 20 to 28 inches in our waters and fight like they're twice that size. They're here year-round, but spring through fall gives you the best shot at sight-casting to singles and small schools cruising the shallow grass beds. What makes reds so special is how they eat – that aggressive strike when a topwater plug lands in front of a cruising fish never gets old. They'll take you into the backing and test every knot you tied.
Speckled trout are the other major player in these waters, and they're as finicky as they are beautiful. These spotted predators love the sandy areas mixed with grass, where they can ambush small baitfish. They're most active during the cooler months, from October through March, when the bigger sow trout move shallow to feed. A five-pound speck is a trophy anywhere, and the Laguna Madre consistently produces fish in that class. They're also excellent table fare, which makes them a customer favorite for folks wanting to take dinner home.
Snook are the wild card that makes every cast exciting. These tropical gamefish are at the northern edge of their range here, which means they're not always predictable, but when they're around, they provide some of the most explosive action you'll find on the flats. They love structure – docks, jetties, mangrove shorelines – and they hit lures with authority. Snook are most common during the warmer months, and catching one this far north is always special. They're catch-and-release only in Texas waters, but the fight alone makes them worth targeting.
This full-day trip gives you everything you need for a top-rated flats fishing experience without any of the rush. Eight hours on the water, all tackle and bait included, plus fish cleaning service so you can focus on what matters – putting quality fish in the boat. Just bring your Texas fishing license, some snacks and drinks, and get ready for a day that'll remind you why South Padre Island fishing has such a reputation. The shallow waters of Laguna Madre don't give up their secrets easily, but with a full day to work them over, you'll leave understanding why so many anglers consider this some of the best sight-fishing on the Gulf Coast.
Redfish are hands-down the most exciting sight-fishing target we have on these flats. These copper-colored bruisers average 20-28 inches and are famous for that distinctive black spot near their tail. They cruise the super shallow water - sometimes with their backs sticking out - hunting around oyster reefs and grass beds in 6 inches to 4 feet of water. Year-round fishing is solid here, but fall and spring offer the most consistent shallow water opportunities. What gets anglers fired up is watching a red's wake as it charges your bait, followed by a powerful run that'll test your drag. They're also fantastic eating with a mild, sweet flavor. Here's the key: when you spot one tailing, get your bait in front of them quietly and be ready - they hit hard and immediately head for structure.

Speckled trout are the bread and butter of our Laguna Madre flats fishing. These spotted beauties typically run 14-18 inches, though we regularly see fish pushing 24 inches on our full-day trips. They prefer grass flats and drop-offs in 2-8 feet of water, especially around dawn and dusk when they're actively feeding. Spring through fall offers the best fishing, with cooler water temperatures bringing them into the shallows. Trout are popular because they bite consistently, fight well for their size, and make outstanding table fare - their white, tender meat is perfect for the dinner plate. They school up during winter in deeper pockets. My go-to technique is working soft plastics slow along the grass edges, especially on overcast days when they're more aggressive.

Snook are one of our most sought-after inshore targets here in the Laguna Madre. These golden, sleek fish average 18-24 inches but can stretch over 3 feet when you hook into a trophy. They love hanging around structure - mangroves, docks, and oyster bars in 2-6 feet of water. The cooler months from October through March give us the most consistent action since they're temperature-sensitive fish. What makes snook special is their explosive strike and bulldogging fight - they'll make multiple runs and try to wrap you around anything nearby. They're also excellent table fare with white, flaky meat. Pro tip: when you see one tailing in the shallows, cast your bait about 3 feet ahead of where they're headed and let it sink naturally.
